Do We Need a Children's Book on Masculinity?
Some would say that a children’s book on masculinity is ridiculous. They would say that masculinity is a social construct. It is not real in a sense but created by society.
Men and women are only different because society tells us they are. There is no difference between how we act or think. There is no significant difference between our physical abilities, and therefore, everything should be equivalent. There should be just as many female police officers as there are male. There should be just as many male nurses as there are female. Anything that stands in the way of total equality in all roles is due to societal constructs.
Of course, that’s not true, though. Men and women are very different. God created man and woman for a reason. We each have unique strengths and callings that pair well together in raising a family. But the world is telling boys something else. They are telling them that being a man is bad. Taking charge or leading others is a form of male domination. Toughness and heroism are toxic.
At BRAVE Books, we have a heart for the next generation and wanted to speak against these lies. That’s why we were so excited when Kevin Sorbo agreed to partner with us on a children’s book about masculinity. Growing up and watching Hercules in the 90s, I couldn’t think of a more masculine guy. Yet, in speaking out against Hollywood and holding to his Christian beliefs, Kevin has shown being a man is about more than just physical strength. It’s about honoring God and standing up no matter the consequences.
If you have a young boy, I recommend you pick up this amazing book that follows a young lion cub as he learns what it means to be a real lion and take care of his family!
